Originally from Leicestershire, I moved to London just over two years ago and went from knowing every road and every person in my local community to not really knowing anyone. I immediately got into the swing of things, playing netball, meeting my amazing housemates and regularly seeing my friends but living in a new community where I didn't know my neighbours felt isolating and something I wasn’t used to.
Over the past two years, I’ve worked for charities combating loneliness and bringing communities together and I have really valued the friendships I have formed with people who are different from me, in age, ethnicity and culture.
It has shown to me that age really is just a number. I realised that the conversations I had with people who were older than me were some of the most meaningful conversations I had for a while. But not only that, spending time with people who are older than me has definitely improved my social and dance skills. I’m never really afraid to get up and have a boogie or sing karaoke now!
I joined North London Cares for all of these reasons. Their ethos is one that resonates with me; tackling loneliness by bringing people together and focusing on the friendship, the fun and the joy that comes from connecting with others. Even though you are surrounded by people every day it can be hard to find those connections that really mean something. By creating these opportunities, we can learn from others, break down stereotypes and reduce people’s sense of loneliness.
As Development Coordinator, I will be supporting our individual donors, coordinating fundraising events and cheering on North London Cares’ challenge fundraisers. I am looking forward to encouraging people who are running marathons, getting stuck into Rough Runners, supporting people selling cakes and much more. I am excited to be part of such a vibrant charity and to make new connections. I look forward to meeting you at an event soon!
