Please note: this post is 103 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only
We’ve always known that North London Cares volunteers are a special bunch. Week in, week out you are the life and soul of social clubs and the backbone of Love Your Neighbour, putting smiles on the faces of older neighbours across Camden and Islington with your warmth and kindness.
If charities could run on spirit alone we would be rolling in riches, but we need cold hard cash too! As a small local charity, North London Cares relies on the support of the community to help us raise the funds we need to run the programmes that mean that Paul never misses his Wednesday ice cream and Lil gets to choose the film on Tuesday nights.
That’s why this month, we asked our amazing volunteers to help us and our older neighbours in a slightly different way with 7 Days to Raise. We couldn’t be more chuffed with the amazing lengths the North London Cares family has gone to. You have helped us to bring in hundreds of pounds, every penny of which will go towards making sure that Ted, Lil and Albert have loads of fun this summer.
If there’s one thing we learned this week, it’s that north London loves a bake sale! We solemnly salute your commitment to cake. Kate, Miranda, Steve and Lorna all fired up the ovens to produce the most mouth-watering array of baked goodies. From cupcakes to traybakes, brownies to flapjacks, the office workers of north London were treated to a sweet feast like never before and they turned out in their droves, forking over the cash for a forkful of sponge.
It’s not just cake that you lovely lot can whip up. Claire and Emilia put on the most incredible Greek banquet complete with spanakopita and baklava. Their friends dressed up in togas, draped themselves in Greek flags and had an evening fit for the gods.
Our very own Emily joined volunteers and put on a great spread too in celebration of the cultural event of the year – Eurovision 2016. With a sweepstake, raffle and entrance donation the £££ came rolling in, and the hilarious acts and nail-biting results made it a night to remember!
Lest you think that all everyone did is eat, drink and make merry this week, never fear. Andrew did us all proud by taking on the Hackney Half Marathon on the hottest day of the year. We’re hoping that just by cheering him from the sidelines we might have burned off a bit of that cake.
And don’t worry, minds were exercised too at Rebecca’s testing pub quiz. With rounds including ‘famous 90s dogs’ you can be sure her friends’ general knowledge was put to the test and they were sent home with brilliant facts they didn’t know before and will never need to know again.
All that joy has raised nearly £1,000 for North London Cares! And it’s not even over yet: David is donating the proceeds from his album sales for the whole month of May and we can’t wait to hear all about Catherine’s power ballad karaoke night which is still to come!
We want to say a huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of the North London Cares team and all our older neighbours to everyone who has worked so hard to make 7 Days to Raise a roaring success.
And if you’re inspired by these brilliant stories, it’s not too late to get involved. You can run an event like this any day of the year and we will always be here to support you. To let us know that you are interested in fundraising for North London Cares, fill in this form and we’ll be in touch to find out more.
