Now that summer is well and truly over, our thoughts have turned to our winter projects and what we can all do in the coming months to lend a helping hand to our older neighbours. Here's what's coming up...
From Thursday 3rd October we will be beginning fortnightly care home visits in Highbury from 10 am-12 noon. This is a chance to chat with some of the older people who live in the home and would like a bit of companionship. You'll be able to help them with some art activities, read, or play a board game.
Following the success of our mobile phone workshops during our Summer Sessions, we will once again be partnering with Castlehaven Community Association to deliver a series of new technology clinics in the coming months. Some older people can at times feel left out by the fast-changing world of technology, but actually can stand to gain a lot from getting to grips with some of these advances, such as being able to communicate with friends and family via text, Skype or email or ordering their weekly shop online. If you would like to help your older neighbours master the art of the internet, digital photography, mobile phones and more and are able to spare a couple of hours from 10 am-12 noon on Tuesdays from 24th September, then please get in touch.
During the Summer Sessions we ran cooking sessions for older men, where our wonderful volunteers passed on their culinary skills to a group of older men for them to recreate at home, as well as to sit down to a delicious meal together, were especially successful. So, as of tomorrow, (17th September) we will be beginning another programme of older men's cooking sessions in Kilburn and we would love if you could help out. If you have a dish you would like to share with your older neighbours and are free on a Tuesday between 17th September and 22nd October, 10am - 12 noon, then please get in touch.
As ever, our ongoing Love Your Neighbour programme, where volunteers give a few hours here and there to help an older neighbour clear their garden, go shopping, or just sit and have a cup of tea, remains very important to us, and provides a vital lifeline for many older and isolated people. If you would like to help out an older person who lives near you in this way, please let us know.
