Introducing North London Stories - NLC's new podcast

Please note: this post is 106 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

Our capital city is rich with stories – tales of the places that mean something to us, the people who shape who we are, and the everyday experiences that become building blocks in our lives.

1.1.1.1-1.1

At North London Cares, older and younger neighbours share these little anecdotes all the time through our Social Clubs and Love Your Neighbour friendships. It's how, even in this rapidly-changing city, people exchange humour and personality, and ultimately build trust.

Now, over the rest of the year and beyond, we want to bring some of those stories – the tales of hope and heartbreak, love and laughter – to a wider audience. We want to celebrate the huge personalities right here on our doorsteps, and to discuss what it means to be Londoners.

That's why today we're releasing the very first volume of our North London Stories podcast series. Please give it a listen!

These short pods have been created through our monthly North London Stories social clubs. At each session, neighbours of all ages gather at Castlehaven Community Association in Camden Town to enjoy a cup of tea and some time together – and to talk about what we’ve all got in common.

Already, neighbours in their 80s and neighbours in their 20s have reminisced over their school days, and we’ve recently discussed the local community and the people who make it what it is.

The discussions are a great way for younger and older neighbours to get to know one another, and to have a laugh and learn as they go. Already, some magical bits of advice and guidance have been shared. Take Ethel, for example, who encourages listeners to be "outrageous" and reminds us:

'We only think it's ourselves, just one person – but practically everybody has got self doubt in things. Stay positive: you're just as good as everyone else.'

We really hope you enjoy the very first edition of North London Stories. We hope it will be much loved by listeners across the community and beyond – older, younger and everyone in between.
