Younger and older neighbours have been meeting at the Kentish Town Community Centre on Wednesday afternoons for four years now – sharing films, ceilidhs, science afternoons, hip-hop history and lots more!
They were joined recently by Matthew Crampton. Matthew is a singer, entertainer and a friend of one of our many Wednesday regulars.
"You'll love my friends in Kentish Town and they'll love you", Catherine told Matthew. And it appears she was right.
Matthew said of his afternoon in NW5:
"I've never had people dance to my singing before. But yesterday John and June took to the floor during an afternoon gig as twenty-somethings and their older neighbours alike endured my performance of some innuendo-laced Music Hall classics. Singing along to plenty of them! It was great fun."
The day after this social club, we were lucky enough to receive a call from the aforementioned John, who had a story of his own to share.
"I called to say thank you to Matthew and everyone who was there yesterday. Me and June have been talking about it this morning. I used to go up to the Finsbury Park Empire with the Boys' Brigade when I was a young'n. I was a bugle player back then. We'd finish band practice and then head to the Music Hall. It cost one and six. Goodness knows what that would be now! When the show had finished, I used to stand outside the Empire waiting for autographs from the performers. I loved hearing the old songs again, it took me back to the best days of my youth."
It's these sorts of interactions that are really common at North London Cares' social clubs. Through those regular get togethers, so many people are rejecting the narrative of social and generational divides – and are coming together.
From Catherine to Matthew to John and June – it's good to be connected.
