I heard about North London Cares nearly a year ago now from a friend, and instantly fell in love. Everything they are about hit home and inspired me, and I’ve loved the time I have spent cooking, dancing and gardening my way to beat isolation in my community! Simple things like a chat over a cup of tea, a caring chat and time given can mean so much to our older neighbours.
When they asked me to join them on the Thames Path Challenge I didn’t even need to consider it. I instantly said yes. The opportunity to raise money and awareness for such an incredible charity was really exciting.
I was extremely nervous about my fundraising. I really wanted to aim above the minimum for the walk. So I got thinking about how to use my strengths to smash the fundraising target. As I’m a chef, my mind wondered to cooking. I spoke to my boss at work and we decided on a ‘Big Boys Breakfast’ for the security team and general office at work. I cooked a full English with AALLLL the trimmings and asked people to make a donation in a jar. On the table I printed my Just Giving page explaining all about the walk and how incredible North London Cares is. Everyone read it and said what an amazing cause it was. I raised £132 in the end, which was an amazing help towards my target of £400!
There was the occasional sneaky person I had to chase up for their donations afterwards, but in general it all ran pretty smoothly and everyone loved it. It really helped doing something I love to help my fundraising as everyone saw the effort and love put in and donated very kindly.
I couldn’t recommend doing a fundraiser enough. However little or large, it’s a great boost towards your target. It also gets people involved as they feel they are getting something for their money which is always a bonus!
