Since the turn of the year, North London Cares has been hosting a variety of exciting social activities for our older neighbours to hang out with young volunteers, every Saturday, in partnership with Islington creatives Cubitt and All Change (and thanks to Islington Giving).
The Saturday Socials have provided a real anchor of interaction for some of our older neighbours who might otherwise want for company and new experiences - and at a time of the week when people can feel especially lonely.
The activities run on 6-8 week turnarounds, but each Saturday is unique; the rewards of conversation are in the discovery, the laughter that flows, and the friendships forged.
As we head into the summer we've now run 18 Saturday Socials, and they've already become indispensible to so many. A lot of people have built new friendships. A lot have learned new skills. Some have done things they never thought they'd do. Who said older people are set in their ways?
Just have a look at some of the activities that have most inspired participants, young and old, so far:
Now we're planning socials for the remainder of 2014. And we want your ideas. Are you mad on computers, and want to share your whizz with neighbours? A mixologist: what about a cocktail afternoon? World Cup wannabes: bring your Brasilian beats. A bookworm? Why not join our new NLC book club?
Whatever your passion, we'd love you to put it to use to help make an older neighbour's weekend. If you've got an idea please let us know, or sign up. Come and make your Saturdays even more social...
