Marlene has been coming to social clubs for four and a half years and is a regular at the film nights as well as the Kentish Town club where she particularly enjoys the festival celebrations.
What was the first North London Cares event that you attended?
Oh gosh, that's going back quite some time now! I think it was a film at the Drovers film club, I remember I'd been given a leaflet so I came down to see what it was all about. I met Laura and Mike at the club and they told me all about the other activities run by North London Cares. What film did we watch? Are you joking?! I cant remember what we watched last month!
What has been your favourite experience with North London Cares so far?
Oh there have been so many over the years. I remember having a delicious christmas meal in Euston and a great time playing games and meeting lots of new people. I really enjoy the workplace visits as I find it fascinating to see what has changed and what's still the same in the parts of London I used to work in. The LSO in Old Street is always a lovely time, there really are far too many to mention! To be honest the best thing about all of the events is the atmosphere, the staff really make you feel welcome and part of something fun.
What advice would you give to a neighbour attending club for the first time?
I often invite people along to clubs, I even meet them beforehand if they want. Lots of the people I have brought along are now attending things by themselves. People soon stop feeling nervous when they see how friendly everyone is.
Where do you like to go in Camden or Islington to feel happy?
I go to a regular fitness class at the old fire station in Holloway Road. Its a really good class and keeps me fit and healthy!
