We know that many older people - and particularly older men - can find it difficult to forge new relationships and to learn new skills that will benefit them in their everyday lives. That's why our amazing young volunteers have been giving time over the past 6 weeks to share recipes, demonstrate their culinary skills and enjoy a meal with a group of older gents at Abbey Community Centre in Kilburn.
The Men's Cooking Sessions have been a great success. In fact, good relationships have forged during the course of the series. Men who were initially a little untalkative have shared stories, experiences and even a glass of wine - and they didn't want the sessions to end after 6 weeks.
So we're extending the Cooking Sessions to Christmas. And we're putting a twist on them: our volunteers will take the gents out for a special lunch at a local restaurant, and we're going to try to arrange a tour of a local supermarket too, so everyone can learn more about some of the ingredients they're putting to good use in the kitchen - in the sessions at The Abbey and, increasingly, at home in their own time.
Check out some of the photos of the last 6 weeks in the slide show below, and feel free to pinch some of the dishes from the recipe book the gents proudly took home yesterday...
