Rou joined North London Cares in October 2021. She attends our social clubs (she’s been to 9 so far) and also has a Love Your Neighbour match, Virdon.
Since getting involved with North London Care’s social clubs, Rou’s friends have decided to sign up to join us too. Her friend Jiajue has now come along to 3 social clubs since hearing about what we do, from her pal Rou.
(Rou and Virdon enjoying their time spent together as a Love Your Neighbour match).
Rou recently told us...
‘Participating in the activities of the North London Cares, gave me the most incredible feeling that companionship is mutual! Every time I meet with our community members, I receive a lot of encouragement and share different experiences.
After rushing essays, such warm and lovely older and younger neighbours share their contemporary life and give me some advice. I am really delighted! That’s the reason I told my friends to come and get involved too.’
(Jiajue & Rou at the Trashin’ Fashion Disco club, which Virdon came and joined too. Neighbours made creative outfits out of recycled materials before having a boogie for the afternoon.)
We asked younger neighbour Anna and her husband Kasper, about their experiences of social clubs and what made Anna encourage Kasper to come and get involved too...
(Younger neighbour, Anna, chatting with John at the Winter Party).
"I really enjoy all clubs, especially the ones when I can meet others face to face. The walking tour around London gave me lots of fun and let me speak with others for longer time, so I could get to know people from our community much better. What is more, I started recognising some regular attendees and built relationship with them- this definitely helped me to get involved!
Then, I started telling Kasper about the clubs, new friends etc, so he was aware what we are doing, who came again, who I saw first time. It was really nice to share these thoughts with him. We were both super inspired and surprised how much energy have all elderly people from the clubs.
To sum up, the social clubs give a great opportunity to spend time actively in friendly atmosphere. They also let me give something to others and this brings me lots of fun and satisfaction :-) "

‘I was interested by Anna to the Social clubs, by the colourful stories about senior’s lives. I was tempted by how interesting those people are and how much they share. And after joining the club the reality exceeded my expectations - those people know a lot about history of London they experienced, did fantastic things during their life and are eager to tell about it. With every conversation there is something new that stays with me.’
