I found NLC by chance as I was looking to volunteer in London – At a time where people were being eased out of lockdown post-pandemic which should’ve been a hopeful time, life still felt disjointed and unclear.
When I found North London Cares, I was so impressed at the vital work that they were doing in the community. I am now running the Love Your Neighbour programme for Islington at North London Cares; our intergenerational friendship matching programme.
My first week working for North London Cares, I attended an ‘All Teams Day’; This is where all of our branches from across the UK came together to discuss ideas, collaborate and most importantly – have a good chat and a cup of tea.
First impressions – everyone is so fabulous! But not only that, it was clear that I joined a charity that really cares about people and holds this in the core of everything they do. I felt so happy to be a part of an organisation like this.
In my first three months, I have had the chance to meet some really interesting Older and Younger neighbours that we have on our programme, and hear some amazing stories! I’ve also been to some amazing social clubs including flamenco dancing and a ghost talk at the Charles Dickens Museum. North London Cares have made me feel so welcome, and I hope to continue the brilliant work that they have been doing, creating new connections and supporting our community.
