What happened when we took five elderly line-dancers to AFC…
Working in partnership with Arsenal in the Community, which is helping to deliver the Cabinet Office’s National Citizenship Scheme, North London Cares headed over to the Emirates Stadium last week to speak to young volunteers about the importance of giving back to our community.
We wanted to show the 15 and 16 year olds that volunteering with our elderly neighbours could be lots of fun, and so we invited Joyce and her line-dancing friends along to teach them some moves.
Here’s what happened:
Before the dancing sessions started, we gave everyone who came along – young and old – the chance to sit together, share views and stories about our local community, and discuss what the different generations had in common (AFC was agreed upon straight away!).
In August, we’ll be bringing the same young volunteers along with us to spend time with some more of our elderly neighbours. They will be helping us to organise a variety of social clubs, including a Desert Island Discs session and activities such as boules.
