Sharing conversation, memories and stories is at the heart of all North London Cares activities. Every day across Camden and Islington younger and older neighbours come together and connect over so many different things, spending time together and forging a community network and genuine friendships.
It’s not often though that we get to record some of these conversations and share them – that’s the beauty of North London Stories. Once a month in the heart of Camden Town neighbours record their conversations in a studio and it’s made into a brilliant podcast. Last month for an extra twist, younger neighbours introduced their older neighbours to video recording on an iPad.
Not only can you hear some of the wonderful anecdotes from neighbours, but you can see the smiles beaming across the room and the how much fun people are having in one another’s company, the genuine interest they have in learning about one another’s lives and sharing their stories with friends old and new.
In October the talking point was Working Memories. We heard from George who worked on Clerkenwell Road making prototypes, including one of the first 3D printers; learned about Walter’s dreams to become a coconut plucker in Sri Lanka; Lil’s adventures working in a laundry; and how June’s dreams of become a nurse changed when she went into the city.
