North London Stories Volume 3: School days (Part 2)

Please note: this post is 103 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

A few weeks ago Michael, Ray, Sonia, Fran and Rebecca, amongst others, got together to share memories of their school days at our North London Stories social club in Camden, the latest in our series of podcasting clubs amongst older and younger neighbours.

We hope you enjoyed listening to the results. It was a pleasure to hear of special times in the canteen and the classroom – and to add to the growing series of North London Stories tales of mischief and misadventure!

That club, though, brought more people and more stories than we could possibly include in just one short pod. So now we're really happy to broadcast North London Stories: School Days Part 2:

On the microphone this time is Lillian, who’s been a North London Cares regular for more than four years now and Tony, who’s loved getting to know volunteers like Sean and Fran during the last couple of months.

They’re from very different places, Lil and Tony. Lil was "born in Islington, raised in Islington and have lived all my life in Islington!". She describes her first school fondly: "The teacher came round with malt, we'd all have a spoonful, and she'd cover us up with a blue blanket and we'd all have a sleep."

There’s a lot more to the story than that though: our Lil tells quite a tale!

Tony, who came to London a little later in life, grew up in a different landscape, surrounded by the fields of West Ireland: "It was lovely. Picking berries on the way home. My parents would say 'what took you so long?' and of course I was full up with berries."

It's such a privilege to hear these sometimes very personal accounts of childhood. We’re all unique, but it’s clear from spending time with Lil, Tony, Sean and Fran that we’ve got a lot in common too. In Camden we definitely share a love of talking, listening and laughing!

We hope you enjoy the next edition of those stories – and will share them far and wide. Check back next month for the next episode on this fascinating exploration of the people and places around who are brought together by proximity but share so much more...
