In the last few weeks North London Cares volunteers have knocked on nearly 1,000 doors in Islington to chat to our older neighbours about staying cool in the hotter months.
Although it didn't turn out to be one of the hottest summers on record, for many of our older neighbours just a few extra degrees of heat can sometimes make life a whole lot harder. That's why we’ve been working with Islington Council to make sure that when the mercury rose those who are elderly and vulnerable, and living at the top of high-rise blocks, knew where to turn to for advice and support.
As well as visiting our neighbours on the doorstep, we met with older members of our community at thirteen care homes across the borough.
We also held stalls at community centres, incorporating film showings (and of course sandwiches and cakes) into the mix wherever possible -- to make the learning as fun as it could be!
It really has been a summer to remember.
A big thank you to all our volunteers for helping to provide advice, company and peace of mind to those in our community who need it most.
