Three hours. Two bikes. One champion

Please note: this post is 87 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

The winter – with its short, cold, dark days – can be hard.

For young professionals, it’s a time to bed down, as people choose to stay in front of the TV rather than go out to meet friends and family. For many older neighbours, there’s rarely a choice. Two in five older people say that TV is their main form of company. 17% see friends and family less than once a week; 11% less than once a month.

A harsh winter only deepens existing feelings of isolation and anonymity. And rising fuel costs means that for some older neighbours, they have a daily decision to make; whether to heat their home, or whether to eat.

Which is why we're looking for enthusiastic teams to burn some fuel.

By taking on our ‘Fuel for Fuel’ challenge between Monday 20th – Friday 24th November, you will help raise vital funds for our Winter Wellbeing project. This is a community led outreach project through which we speak to as many older neighbours across Camden and Islington as possible to ensure they are keeping warm, well, active and connected during the winter months.

By fundraising through ‘Fuel for Fuel’, you could help pay for blankets for older neighbours, or warm items of clothing, or help fund a Social Club during the winter, bringing neighbours together to share time, conversation and laughter.

How it works:

-       During the week of Monday 20th November, book three hours in the working day to take on the challenge.

-       Source two stationary exercise bikes (we can help with this!)

-       Either nominate two people, or work as two teams, and go head to head to see who can cycle the furthest distance over the course of the three hours.

-       Whoever cycles the furthest is deemed the champion!

You can set the fundraising target and how much you hope to raise. Just £20 could help us fund a Social Club, so a target of £500 could help fund a whole month of Social Clubs across Camden and Islington. You could either fundraise as a company or – if you want to get even more competitive – as two teams!

And, to help double the difference your energy will make, we'd love to talk to you about how you could host a party for older neighbours at your office this winter.

To get involved, please email Emily on [email protected]. She will send you more information – including a fundraising pack and t-shirts for your team – and help you with the logistics for your event.
