Time for Elevenses: cake and conversation in Clerkenwell

Please note: this post is 93 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

Proud north Londoners, community baker Ishoo and 2016 Great British Bake Off winner, Candice Brown, came along to meet and share time with their older neighbours at North London Cares’ ‘Cakes for Clerkenwell’ Social Club yesterday.

It was a great afternoon, where older and younger neighbours alike listened intently to Ishoo’s baking story. She told the Kings Cross gang everything from the trials and tribulations of being a pastry chef, to all about starting her new business, which creates a supportive community for Chef’s.

Candice also told her baking story and despite her recent rise to fame, north London – and its community – is still very close to her heart; “Watching my grandma bake, shopping in the markets, being in north London – that’s home.

She then shared her memories of baking with her grandma with her older neighbours; “My grandma is my inspiration. She never bought cake, she always made it herself. When I was younger, I was practically attached to her.”

Candice’s very own recipe book, which will be released later this year, includes several of her grandma’s original recipes, including her Boiled Fruit Cake and Butterscotch Brownies. Older neighbours Maureen and Laura said they look forward to reading it.

Ishoo and Candice’s baking stories inspired their older neighbours to share their own memories. Edna grew up in Lancashire and Parkin remains her favourite cake. Leida, 91, was born in Estonia; she remembers putting a coin in the post dinner pudding, and the lucky person who found it won a prize.

Our older neighbours thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and I’m sure the memories shared will continue to bring happiness to all that attended.
