Almost exactly a year ago, on April 4th 2012, North London Cares hosted our very first Social Club, a screening of "The King's Speech" at the Resource Centre on Holloway Road. Tonight, we're hosting our 100th such gathering, a Storytelling event off the Cally Road for potentially isolated older people to get together and share time and friendship with their younger neighbours.
Each of these 100 events has been unique: from dance events to discussion groups, people have shared individual interactions and built positive relationships across generations, backgrounds and ethnicities, and in various locations.
We've now run 75 of these events in the borough of Islington, and 25 in Camden (we're beginning much more work in Camden this month). They've taken place across our patch -- in Archway, King's Cross, Somers Town, Queen's Crecent, Holloway, Cally Road, Kentish Town, Stoke Newington and Finsbury Park.
We're really proud that these get-togethers have become a mainstay of our work over the past year. For anyone who's volunteered and spent time with Peggy or Ray or Cathy or Ann, they'll know that these can be special occasions, where laughter conversation and respect abound.
Here, June and Harry, two people who came to that very first Social Club a year ago, talk about their now regular Tuesday evenings hanging out with volunteers. Please watch it and share it widely.
