When we set up NLC's "Social Clubs" 3 years ago this month, we didn't know what to expect. We knew we wanted to bring older and younger neighbours together to share time, laughter and cultural exchange. But we never imagined that 3 years on our family of fabulous volunteers would have hosted over 600...
...and so, so much more - 66 different activity types, all over Camden and Islington.
For instance, just last weekend, Emily, Alice, Lynne and Stephen continued the new tradition of our annual Grand National Party - joining Nan, Ted, Maria, Isabel and 20 other neighbours for a special afternoon's entertainment. The punters donned their racing glad rags, and birthday boy Fred (88 on Saturday) led the charge to the bookies.
But in spite of Katrina and Marion's *very* vocal support for their gee-gees, not one of 42 bets came in - not one!
Of course, it didn't dampen the party spirits - not a bit. With the Buck's Fizz flowing, the sun shining and winnings changing hands through our own mini races, everyone agreed it was a wonderful afternoon - the sort that helps older and younger neighbours alike stay valued, vibrant and visible in this ever changing city.
It's our amazing volunteers who make this possible. Some people get involved through NLC's Social Clubs, others through our Love Your Neighbour project. All are valued and appreciated - and all are challenged and supported in return by their older neighbours.
If you'd like to get involved in any of our programmes, please sign up and we'll be in touch very soon.
