Earlier this year, and led by Rebecca (who's Grandpa was the subject of our last podcast), neighbours gathered as part of the North London Stories social club to share a little of their own family history with friends. Some people like Lil were born and raised, well evacuation years aside, in north London. Others have spent many of their years moving from place to place before making our wonderful capital city a home.

In the Castlehaven recording studio in Camden, where these firm friends meet, everyone lends an ear and everyone has a voice. On this podcast, it's Harry's you hear first:

"As you can tell by the accent, I was born in...Oxford."

He says with his tongue in cheek, prompting laughter. Despite this being true, an Oxford accent it is not!

"My mother was evacuated during the war and didn't have time to get back to London from Oxford before I arrived!"

Sonia shared some of her earliest memories too...

"As for the street my mum bought a house on...we were the first black family to move in. This is the late 60s. It was polite but people kept their distance at the same time. People said good morning and good evening. It wasn't racially divided or anything but people kept their distance."

Not every story is an easy one to tell so we're thankful to Sonia and Harry for sharing and being so open.

And there are more stories on the podcast too, from younger neighbours Amy and Fran, involving rumours of family members running away to the circus, as well as German drinking rituals. We'll leave them to explain!

It's good to talk. Even more so when people listen. Here's to many more fantastic social clubs across Camden and Islington through the winter.
