Summer can be lonely too – but it needn't be that way

Please note: this post is 89 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

The summer – or Britain's version of it – is well and truly here. School's out, the sun's out (sometimes) and many Londoners are enjoying the opportunities afforded by living in one of the best cities in the world. For those who can, that means Pimm's parties, picnics in the park, or sport on the big screen with friends.

But imagine if you didn't feel part of all that entertainment, or felt the party passing you by. For many, the summer can actually be a lonely time – with the city a-throng with life, but with too little opportunity to share it.

For many of our older neighbours who may live alone or who don't have wide social networks, that could lead to a summer of sadness. But equally, for many younger people too, the social media sight of colleagues enjoying cocktails and festivals can sometimes leave us all feeling a little lonely.

That's why North London Cares exists – to bring older people often with deep roots but few connections together with their younger neighbours often with hundreds of connections but few roots in the capital. And through new friendships and new shared experiences, different generations can all feel part of our rapidly changing city, rather than left behind by it.

So this summer, as North London Cares marks six years of friendship, we're hosting dozens of parties across north London – dances, pub clubs, sports watch parties, treasure hunts and more – to help older and younger people alike to feel more connected, more visible, and to bring people together across generational divides.

Wherever you are, you can support us. A donation of £20 today could help fund one of our Social Clubs this August. £40 could give two of our Love Your Neighbour friends a takeaway to share, or even a trip to the local pub together.

We're grateful for everyone's support – thank you for helping us spread the summer sunshine.
