At the end of March, our wonderful supporters donned their aprons and oven gloves to get baking for their community and raise money North London Cares’ spring social clubs. And they did a fantastic job, raising an awesome £1,500!

Bakers at the Centre for Ageing Better and Design Council were certainly inventive by holding a star baker’s competition, with creations to rival anything on the Great British Bake Off! The winner was a glorious Pimms’ Cake. The recipe can be found here.

Mary – with the help of her colleagues at WhatUsersDo – baked for five days straight, creating scrumptious savoury and sweet snacks every working day, from mini mushroom quiches to banana bread.

And Victoria inspired her colleagues to take part in a full week of baking as well, with a combination of sugary, sugar-free and savoury snacks to feed the office; from her own Goats Cheese and Tomato Tart, to Dawn’s Nutty Peanut Butter Cookies.

Jonny got creative on a “Here to Create” theme - home-made cakes to which you add your own toppings! Yum.

Katherine set up her bake sale in the sunshine, creating colourful cupcakes and other delicious delights for passerbys. She even chatted with older neighbours in the community, who will hopefully come along to our spring activities

And Amy took on the challenge of baking to help raise money for her 13.1 mile run through the Royal Parks in October. In doing so, she raised over half her fundraising target! Well done Amy.

Even North London Cares’ joined in, baking a selection of treats from vegan banana and peanut butter cupcakes to almond, lemon and polenta cake, which were sampled by our fellow Collective members.

To round off the week, two fantastic bakers and proud north Londoners met Margaret, Inez and the gang at Clerkenwell. Community baker Ishoo and 2016 Great British Bake Off winner, Candice Brown came along to our Thursday afternoon club to meet and share time with their older neighbours. The conversation focused on food memories, with older neighbour Leida remembering how she used to put a coin in the pudding, and the lucky person who found it won a prize.

Thank you to everyone who took part. You have helped to make friendships and laughter possible this spring across Camden and Islington. You are all baking champions!
