February is the month to show love... for your community (it will save you the cost of a card and it won’t disappoint!) Older neighbours love the company of young volunteers and feel so valued by the time you give. Check out our fun-filled events for February - and if you can make one or two please sign up to be part of the community. It really would mean a lot.
As winter deepens and NLC reaches the half way mark of our 4th consecutive Winter Wellbeing project, one of our winter team, Chris Clarke, blogs on the progress made so far - and what it means to be part of the community.
It’s no wonder 8 million people choose to live in our fine Capital. Every day London feels like the biggest and best party, with guests travelling from around the globe, a buffet of food from every nation, more booze than you could ever imagine and themed activities on offer every second of every day. No one throws a shindig like London, but if you don't feel invited to the party, it can also be an incredibly isolating place to live.
We're coming to the end of the year and, as is tradition, we're reflecting on some of what we've done over the past 12 months...
Today, North London Cares' and our sister charity South London Cares' founder, Alex Smith, spoke at the Campaign to End Loneliness annual conference. Read Alex's blog on some of the issues and trends unique to urban settings like ours that lead us to do what we do...
Winter can be a deeply isolating time for older people. Short, cold days, icy conditions, unpredictable snowfall, high food and fuel bills and reduced interaction can massively increase immobility, loneliness and anxiety - perpetuating social isolation and increasing morbidity and mortality amongst an already vulnerable group.
Our Projects Officer Jessica writes about North London Cares' latest project in partnership with Engage Events, bringing a primary school together with a local care home to help combat loneliness...
Since we started North London Cares three years ago, over 700 young people have signed up to hang out with their older neighbours in Camden and Islington - giving a little extra time, practical support, social connection and human companionship, and receiving plenty back in return.
North London Cares' objectives are three-fold: to reduce loneliness and isolation amongst older people; to increase older people's wellbeing, resilience, confidence and skills in order that older people can navigate a rapidly changing modern world; and to bring young professionals and older people together across social and generational divides, for the benefit of all.
