Legacy
Joyce Smith lives in Clissold Park, just in the pocket between Highbury Corner and Stoke Newington. In summer the park gets packed with runners and revellers; in winter, it's a jagged, icy expanse.

It's our 3rd birthday today! 3 years ago, we launched on the worst night of rioting as a brand new organisation designed to engage young people to make a positive contribution to their communities, in particular to support their older neighbours and confront isolation.
It's hard to believe that it's almost three years since North London Cares launched amid rioting in August 2011. During those 36 months, you - our amazing volunteers - have hosted 440 Social Clubs in Camden and Islington, created 28,000 new interactions and shared 3,400 meals with older neighbours, most of whom live alone in an anxious, rapidly changing world.
The World Cup might be over and the Commonwealth Games almost up - but we've also got plenty of opportunities to enjoy the rest of the summer by socialising with and helping our older neighbours this August...
Over the past week, we've been thinking a lot about the work we do, and how we can best enable you lot - our amazing volunteers - most effectively to support our older neighbours in Camden and Islington. As part of that process, we've had a look at all the documents, proposals, web pages and reports we've created over the past 3 years - and come up with this, a Word Cloud that articulates what we do.

Recently, North London Cares was invited to contribute to the launch and then a hearing of the Commission on the Voluntary Sector and Ageing. It's great to have a voice in this type of national forum to speak about our experience on the ground matching young professional volunteers to older neighbours to help combat isolation. Because even in an "age of austerity", there's so much to be positive about - so many opportunities of the networked age that we at NLC try to tap into every day.
