Another month, another set of North London Stories! And this time you get to spend a little extra time with the gang, as the podcast is a little longer than normal. No surprise really – who doesn't love a holiday?
When I explain to people why I joined North London Cares, I always answer with the same thing – community and people.
North London Cares' range of social clubs bring older and younger Londoners together for parties, dances and shared group time. So many wonderful friendships form at these events. Sometimes, the friendships take on a life of their own outside our group activities, and lead to individual one-to-one friendships as part of our Love Your Neighbour programme.
Here at North London Cares we're not quite ready to accept that the holiday season is over. So in this fifth North London Stories podcast, hear Ethel, Rebecca, Michael and Peter reminiscing about their holiday memories – and plan for even more exciting times...
Five years ago today, North London Cares opened amid rioting on our streets. For the previous year, since election day 2010 when the idea first arose, we'd had the intention of bringing parallel worlds together to combat isolation in London. We knew that ultimately we wanted to create a community network of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out and helping one another for the benefit of all participants in our rapidly changing city.
On 2nd July, 18 of our fantastic North London Cares family walked 50km to 100km in the London 2 Cambridge Challenge – and an impressive amount of money was raised.
On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October, we're looking for a brave team of challengers to take on the ultimate survival race – Bear Grylls style.
Hanging out with her older neighbours through North London Cares gave volunteer Rebecca a new sense of purpose and pride – so she made a career change and joined our team full time. In her first blog as Projects Officer for our social clubs, Rebecca reflects on the things that brought her here...
