This summer North London Cares will be teaming up with Castlehaven Community Association and the Mary Ward Centre to deliver a programme of activities for people in Camden.
Since just before Christmas, North London Cares has been running monthly storytelling nights in Islington. The amazing Hannah, Marike and Sylvian, who share intricate, suspenseful and expressive tales from across the ages, have become much loved by our Tuesday gang.
We've got a busy summer of events coming up at North London Cares and we're really excited about some of the new stuff that's coming up...!
On Saturday afternoon, North London Cares held our third event of Camden Intergenerational Week and our sixth session in 5 days, following on from our Quiz Afternoon in Queen's Crescent, two Film Nights and the Knit & Knatter and Shared Histories sessions.
At North London Cares, we love days like yesterday. Our young professional volunteers hosted three innovative events, from Film Clubs in Community Centres to Knit & Knatter sessions in a local cafe, welcoming 30+ of their older neighbours to activities that provide new social connections, as well as cultural stimulation and understanding.
Andreia is a great friend to many of her neighbours. She regularly volutneers through North London Cares -- whether helping Ken get the support he needs from the Council, helping Carlinda get her bills down, or clearing gardens for Cathy or Bridget...
A few weeks ago regular film club attendee Marian told our volunteer Xi that she’d like to learn how to make authentic Chinese food. And today, North London Cares, with a lot of kind help from Xi and her friend Sammy made that happen!
Today we gave a talk at a community centre in Camden about the work North London Cares does. We wanted to use the gathering of older people in West Hamstead to provide them with an opportunity to tell us about the type activities they'd like to take part in -- so that we can shape our activities around them.
Last week we were joined for a discussion by other local organisations working in north London to combat loneliness and isolation. As part of our work under Camden Council's Innovation and Development Fund we brought together various local service providers, thinkers and funders to share experiences and ideas, to troubleshoot, and to come up with resources that will benefit all our work -- and, most importantly, the people we work with -- in the future.
Throughout this winter, North London Cares volunteers delivered an ambitious project to help keep our older neighbours in Islington warm, active, healthy and connected through a difficult time. It proved to be invaluable work, as local people suffered one of the coldest winters in memory, including at least 5 bitter snaps when snow fell heavily.
