Starting in February, North London Cares began releasing 6 short films about some of the people we work with in Camden and Islington; their lives, their passions, the contributions they continue to make to their neighbours and commnunities, and the many ways in which they stay active and inspired. Check out those films here as they appear online week-by-week.
One of North London Cares’ main aims is to bring older and younger people together to share experiences and learn from one another. Ahead of the launch of our exciting Hidden Heroes project next week, we have spoken to groups of older and younger people to find out how they identify with their local community: what has changed; what has stayed the same; what they love; and what they hate. This is their London.
At NLC we like to make sure that our older neighbours and volunteers have as many opportunities as possible to experience London's cultural offerings together. So we host regular outings to ensure everyone makes the most of them.
Mark Kermode, Jonathon Ross, Claudia Winkleman and now NLC’s Lilian Pannell – the new film reviewer for BBC1! This week Lil returned to The One Show, after her hilarious appearance on the programme last year, and didn’t disappoint!
With the score tied at one game each, Quan and Fred returned to the table for the decider. The excited cheers died down and the crowd went silent as they nervously watched the duo compete for the trophy. Quan took an early lead but Fred’s competitive spirit could not be quashed. The power demonstrated in every serve was met with gasps from supporters, followed by jubilant roars. Back and forth, back and forth – Islington’s first over 55’s table tennis tournament did not disappoint.
Our Kentish Town Social Club is new to the North London Cares calendar, but the adventurous and enthusiastic group is certainly making up for lost time!
From Hollywood blockbusters starring Bruce Willis (Lil’s favourite!) to the old classics featuring Cary Grant (Laura’s favourite!) there’s something for everyone at our Tuesday night Film Club and 2014 has started strong with a fascinating talk from Islington’s Lost Cinemas.
From cooking to crochet, our latest initiative, Saturday Socials, has proved a popular choice for those looking to revive their weekends.
From cassoulet to chocolate cake, our men’s cooking group has had a busy start to 2014, learning how to prepare delicious and affordable dishes thanks to our fantastic volunteers and top London restaurant PipsDish.
What started out as a six-week course, has now become a firm fixture on the NLC calendar, with numbers growing each week as word spreads.
