"I've enjoyed today - I'm learning how to speak again! I've been listening to the telly, watching umpteen repeats and going for walks around the block, but there's been no-one to see." Kathy, 66. As we move back into lockdown, we talk about the sweet fleeting moments of this summer and autumns' face-to-face clubs at North London Cares.
Over the last decade, North London Cares’ Winter Wellbeing project has ensured that older neighbours across Camden and Islington stay warm, safe, active and connected during the most isolating season. "I've never met Valerie or Nish or Tony in person, but I feel like I have. It's given me a connection at a time when that's been hard to come by. It's really funny but I think of them as my phone family now and I look forward to what we are going to chat about next!" Cheryl
Nine years ago, North London Cares opened spontaneously amid rioting in our communities. We did so because we recognised that isolation was a gateway into so many other problems in our community, and because connection was the route out. Nine years later, we're proud of what we've achieved.
For each of the past nine years, North London Cares' Winter Wellbeing project has helped older neighbours stay warm, active and connected in disconnecting times – through proactive outreach in our communities in north London. In 2019/20, we ran the project again in partnership with Camden and Islington Councils. Learn more about the impact of the project in our blog, report and infographic.
Our older and younger neighbours bring so many different stories, personalities and skills to the table. Younger neighbour Katie has used her prowess as a language teacher to teach two virtual French lessons. Read more about her experience here.
The small matter of a global lockdown hasn't stopped our incredible neighbours staying in contact with each other and bringing some much needed joy at a difficult time. Find out how younger neighbour Chloe has become the "Quarantine Quiz Queen" of North London!
